1STBANK Center, Saturday June 12 was an exciting double-header as the Denver Roller Dolls all-star team the Mile High Club and B-team Bruising Altitude continued an undefeated 2010 season. In the first bout Bruising Altitude defeated the Silicon Valley Roller Girls B team, the KillaBytes, 183-85. In the second bout the Mile High Club took a 205-135 win over the Rat City Rollergirls.

The WFTDA West is a tough region in the 2010 season, home to last year’s national champions and #3 and #4 teams (Oly Rollers, Denver Roller Dolls and Rocky Mountain Rollergirls, respectively), this should make for a very challenging and exciting western regional tournament this year. Denver took a 3-0 advantage over Rat City with this win. Denver’s Mile High Club has given Rat City their third and fourth biggest losses ever with this 70 point score difference and last season’s 78 point win.
Rat City looked hungry and grabbed lead jammer for the first two jams with veteran Carmen Getsome in the first jam against Heather Juska. Carmen Getsome was forced to call the jam before she could score any points when Juska turned on the afterburners and passed her on the scoring approach, 0-0. In the second jam Primp Daddy (transfer from the Burning River Rollergirls of Cleveland) got lead for Rat City and took a 4-0 win over Julie Adams. The Rat City pack tried to keep things fast to combat the Denver defense. However, Denver struck back in jam 3, as Juska took lead in a power jam for a 13-0 win over Juliet Bravo. Juliet Bravo took a seat in the penalty box, which was just the start of Rat City’s penalty problems for the night. Denver would also suffer from jammer penalties as Rat City pulled within one point when Juliet Bravo took an 8-0 win against Monica Carson during a power jam. Rat City regained the lead in another power jam, with Primp Daddy versus Juska for a 15-4 win, making the score 22 to 27. The last time Rat City would hold the lead was with about 19 minutes left in the first half with Ann R. Kissed versus Kim Wilms in a 8-3 win for Denver.
The Mile High Club pulled to a 30-30 tie with about 17 minutes remaining and then started to build a lead in jam 10 with Juska’s 10-0 win against Juliet Bravo. Monica Carson grabbed lead and a 8-0 win over Jalapeno Business to extend the lead to 52-30. The Mile High Club defense hampered the Rat City jammers, and Denver outscored Rat City 55 to 18 in the last 11 jams ending the first half with a commanding 85 to 48 lead. Juska and Adams both ended the first half with over 30 points apiece.
In the second half, Julie Adams grabbed lead and Denver’s defense forced a cut on Primp Daddy, allowing Adams to skate to a 24-0 power jam, extending the Denver lead to 111 to 51. Carmen Getsome then took lead and a 14-1 jam over Monica Carson to pull Rat City within 52 points. However, Kim Wilms then scored 14-0 over Primp Daddy, pulling Denver further away 153 to 79. Both teams faced penalty trouble with their jammers; however, Rat City was not able to fully capitalize on their power jams against the Denver defense. Even with a 4-2 pack disadvantage, Denver was able to handle the Rat City jammers often on a one-on-one blocker to jammer basis. At about 14 minutes remaining, Carmen Getsome took a 14-5 win over Juska, which closed the gap to 61 points.
Julie Adams scored 14 unanswered points when Valtron 3000 remained trapped in the pack, unable to break the inpenetrable Mile High Club defense. With about seven minutes remaining in the second half, Rat City called a time out to try to regroup for a comeback. A 4-0 win for Juska over Ann R. Kissed put Denver at the 200 point mark with Rat City trailing at 114. Carmen Getsome was awarded lead jammer and gambled with the Denver jammer and won power jams and points on a few jams. However, it was not enough for a Rat City comeback. Rat City scored 87 points in the second half but could not control the Denver jammers, who ran away with 120 points. – Geisha X

Bruising Altitude vs. KillaBytes Recap

Bruising Altitude faced their toughest challenge this year with the Silicon Valley visiting B team. However, the sticky-smart defensive pack and ultra fast and tireless jammers for Bruising Altitude managed a 183 to 85 win. Bruising Altitude jumped out to an early lead 23-2 within the first three jams with jamming from Kendra Blood, Fawn Stalking, and Dharma Gedden. Dharma Gedden, one of the founders of the Denver Roller Dolls, was skating her last bout before retiring from the league. The KillaBytes were not able to grab a lead jammer call until jam 8, but still could not outscore Bruising Altitude.
Bruising Altitude consistently got lead jammer calls in the first half. Kendra Blood took a 35-0 win over Postal Servix in a power jam set up by Deadly Long Legs. Kendra demonstrated her marathon-running background for an intimidating 88 to 17 lead for Bruising Altitude. A false start by Fawn Stalking resulted in a power jam for the KillaBytes, and Catherine Beata Bones was able to take a 5-0 win to spark a mini rally with Zootown Throwdown scoring a 10-0 win over Dharma Gedden in the next jam, pulling the KillaBytes within 56 points at 88 to 32. Bruising Altitude then held the KillaBytes scoreless for the next four jams while Fawn Stalking and Barbie Boop took advantage of their team’s aggressive defensive pack to score over 20 points combined. The score at the end of the first half was Bruising Altitude 111 to KillaBytes 36.
While penalties plagued both teams in the second half, Bruising Altitude scored 72 with help from a big 20 point jam from Kendra Blood as the KillaBytes scored 49 with help from Cyntax and Zootown Throwdown. Deadly Long Legs and Kendra Blood were effective blockers and jammers, who created power jams for their jammers and both of whom went on to skate in the second bout for the Mile High Club. The KillaBytes featured some of the most experienced packs and talented jammers that Bruising Altitude has ever faced. – Geisha X
