Denver Roller Dolls to Appear at National Veteran Wheelchair Games!
ShareDenver Roller Dolls will be volunteering at the National Veteran Wheelchair Games in Denver and featured in the opening ceremonies.
The largest annual wheelchair sports competition in the world, the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, will be held in Denver from July 4-9th. And who better to support the participants and energize the crowd than fellow wheeled athletes, the Denver Roller Dolls?
The Dolls will be on hand (and on skates!) to meet the athletes and spectators throughout the Games. On July 4th, skaters will assist through registration and the Athlete Reception, and then will take part in the official Opening Ceremonies in Civic Center Park starting at 7:30pm.
During a bout, the skaters are able to concentrate on their sport thanks to the hard work of volunteers. These Games offer the Dolls the opportunity to help other athletes perform at their best. The Dolls will be helping with the Rugby events through the week. By focusing on a single sport, friendships between athletes can be formed through the week-long event.
The Games’ Chair of Energy, Sara Clark, recognized what a great addition the Denver Roller Dolls would make to the program. “Here’s someone on wheels right next to the veterans, who are amazing athletes. What a great concept!”
Roller Doll Gator Dunn agrees. “My mother is a double amputee, so I’m very happy to see men and women in wheelchairs able to participate in sports. It’s even more special that these athletes have all served our country.”
The Denver Roller Dolls will also be participating in the Closing Ceremonies honoring all Games participants, to be held July 9th at the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum. A complete schedule of events is available for download at http://www1.va.gov/opa/speceven/wcg/docs/wcg_schedule.pdf
The Denver Roller Dolls is a 501(c)3 non-profit, volunteer-run organization dedicated to developing and promoting the sport of women’s roller derby, training skaters for local, national and inter-league competition, and strengthening the communities in which we live. The Dolls are honored to appear at the National Veteran Wheelchair Games.
