Denver Roller Dolls Raise Over $650 for Girls Inc!
ShareDenver Roller Dolls play kickball and raise money for charity!
June 24th marked the 3rd annual “Dolls and Kickballs” charity kickball game between the Denver Roller Dolls and the Denver Kickball Coalition. The DKBC pulled off a 10-2 victory, but the real winner was Girls Inc, the charity to which all event proceeds were donated.
The atmosphere of the yearly event is jovial: players and spectators kick in a donation for hotdogs, drinks and snacks, and for a chance to win one of many donated prizes. For the Dolls who can’t remember back to their grammar school days, there is a crash course on the rules right before the game begins. Denver Roller Dolls head referee Loren Order pulls the team close for a pep talk - on Sundays she plays with the DKBC, but today she’s representing the Dolls. “Don’t be fooled by the jeans- that player is the league MVP. The tall girl in black will kick it into right field.”
The Dolls are held scoreless through the 7th inning, but eventually manage to get a few points on the board. Given the Denver Roller Dolls’ reputation as high-scoring powerhouses on the derby track, an 8 point margin is nothing. (At the last Dolls’ home bout, the Mile High Club All-Stars beat Seattle’s Rat City Rollergirls 205-135 and the B-Team Bruising Altitude beat San Jose’s Silicon Valley Roller Girls 183-85.)
Denver Roller Dolls superfan Sean Chavez is settled in the grass behind the catcher, watching the game with a friend. Sean is “the cape guy” at bouts, sporting a decorated cape (and occasional army helmet) to support his favorite teams (the Green Barrettes and the Mile High Club). Today Sean is capeless, but still avidly cheering on his favorite local athletes. “[A friend] and I made the decision to go because Aug 21st seemed far too long to wait for a DRD fix,” Sean explains. “This is the first DRD charity event I’ve ever attended, and I’m looking forward to more non-bout night events.”
At the end of the game, the players pose for photos and continue to socialize. A few of the kickballers inquire about roller derby tryouts, and an informal pick-up game starts. Slowly, the grill is put away and the donation jar emptied. In a few hours of outdoor fun, the players raise $680.07 for their charity partner. Sean himself heads home with several prizes from the Dolls to add to his collection. “I’d like to applaud DRD, DKBC, and all the DRD business partners who contributed prizes to help drive donations for Girls Inc. Bravo!”
Members of both the Denver Roller Dolls and the Denver Kickball Coalition would like to thank all those who contributed to making this event a success, and look forward to next year’s rematch!
