Over 30 New Skaters Join the League
ShareFresh on the heels of last week’s announcement of a partnership with KSE/AEG, the Denver Roller Dolls held open tryouts to welcome new skaters to the league. Tryouts were held January 26, 2010 in the Dolls' practice venue, the Wagon Wheel Skate Center.
Approximately 50 potential new skaters attended the tryouts, and 34 made the cut, earning the right to train with athletes on one of the country’s top roller derby teams. In November, 2009 the Denver Roller Dolls’ All-Star team, the Mile High Club, placed 3rd in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association National Tournament.
Recruitment Coordinator Vicky “Slick Vick” Cruz was impressed. “I am excited about the talent we brought in from this try out. We are very lucky to have found so many athletes to join our league and make us an even stronger organization. … This is a great start to this new season and I’m already looking forward to finding the next set of amazing skaters for our spring try out.”
These new “Babydolls” will be introduced to the league via “The Dollhouse”, a new skater training program where they will hone their skating and learn specific derby-related skills. After a probation period, they will eligible to be drafted to one of the three home teams. The most rapidly advancing skaters will be eligible to bout as early as May or June of this year.
Tryout Coordinator Teresa “Wicked Sister” Rusk attributes the high quality of attendees to a new program the league introduced this year. “Drop in Derby” is held at the league’s home practice rink every Sunday evening for women aged 21 and up and serves as great preparation for tryouts as well as league play.
Those who were not accepted into the league as a skater at this time can continue to hone their skills at Drop-In Derby, or can get involved with the league in other ways. There are many volunteer opportunities available, and referee recruitment will be held in upcoming months.
